Classic Apple Crisp
Ingredients:
- 4-5 large apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, for serving (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking dish or a similar-sized baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss well to coat the apples evenly with the sugar and spices.
- Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it out into an even layer.
- In a separate mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, and brown sugar. Add the cold pieces of butter to the bowl and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the oat mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle the oat mixture evenly over the top of the apples in the baking dish.
- Bake the apple crisp in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbling.
- Remove the apple crisp from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
- Serve the warm apple crisp with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.
